Popcorn is a beloved snack enjoyed by many, but not all popcorn is created equal. If you're a fan of mushroom popcorn, you may know that achieving perfectly round shape of mushroom popcorn can be a bit of a challenge. Fear not, as we have compiled these 9 expert tips to help you master the art of making perfectly round and crisp mushroom popcorn every time.
The first 5 tips are in this blog post, and the remaining 4 will be shared in the next one, because thereâs a lot to cover! đ

1. Start with the Right Kernel, and Store It Properly
Selecting the right type of popcorn kernels is the key to getting that perfectly round shape. Choose mushroom popcorn kernels, which are specially cultivated to pop into large, ball-like pieces ideal for coating or glazing.
If you notice a few butterfly-shaped pieces after popping using our mushroom popcorn kernels, donât worry. Thatâs completely normal. Our premium hybrid mushroom kernels have an 80% mushrooming rate, meaning a small percentage of butterfly shapes can appear in each batch.
To keep the kernels in top condition, store them in an airtight container at 10-15°C. Proper storage helps maintain their natural moisture, which is essential for consistent popping results. Kernels that become too dry may not pop well, while those exposed to high humidity are prone to spoilage.
Â
2. Use the Proper Equipment
You can use standard kitchenware, like a stainless steel pot, or invest in a high-quality popcorn maker or air popper to achieve even heating and ensure well-shaped mushroom popcorn.
If you're considering a popcorn maker, the Whirley-Pop Hand Crank Popping Machine is a great option. Unlike typical cooking equipment, this popper features a wooden handle and crank connected to a stirrer inside the popper, allowing you to continuously move the popcorn while it cooks, thereby preventing burning.
While shaking a pot can help distribute the ingredients, it lacks the precision of the Whirley-Pop's geared stirrer. This precision minimizes the risk of burning and ensures even popping, which is crucial for achieving perfectly round mushroom popcorn.

3. Measure the Right Amount of Kernels
Be sure to use a measuring cup to portion the appropriate amount of mushroom popcorn kernels since overcrowding the popper can lead to uneven heating and thus irregular shapes.
Â
4. Preheat Your Popcorn Maker with Enough Oil Between 200°C - 230°C
Before adding kernels, preheat your popcorn maker with a suitable amount of oil with high smoke points (e.g., coconut oil, canola oil, or another neutral highâheat option) over steady medium to mediumâhigh heat.
If your machine has a temperature control, set it between 200°C and 230°C, which is the ideal range for producing round, mushroomâshaped popcorn.
Start with a 1:1 ratio of kernels to oil as a baseline. Adjust the ratio after testing to find the balance that works best for your setup. One example from chef Jessica Koslow of Sqirl in Los Angeles is an especially rich ratio: 1/2 cup of oil to 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels, which uses more oil than kernels. For more details, see The Columbianâs article on making âultimate popcornâ.
The oil acts as the heat transfer agent needed to get the kernels to the required temperature, helping distribute heat evenly. Using too little oil can cause uneven heating, resulting in irregularly shaped or partially popped kernels.
If youâre using an air popper, skip the oil entirely. Only kernels should go inside. Adding any other ingredients could damage the machine. Always refer to your popperâs user manual for detailed operating guidance.
Â
5. Stir or Shake at a Consistent Temperature
Maintain a steady, consistent temperature. Avoid adjusting the heat midâcook, as fluctuations can cause irregular shapes and uneven popping.
Keep the kernels in motion so they donât stay in one spot too long, and to allow the unpopped kernels to fall to the bottom to increase their chance of popping. You can gently agitate the pot during cooking, or turn the handle continuously if youâre using a WhirleyâPop.
For poppers with an automatic stirring mechanism, simply watch the process. No manual movement is needed.
Using an air popper? Just observe as well. The circulating hot air keeps the kernels moving on its own, needing no manual shaking or stirring.
